The Barbados Tridents Women clinched a thrilling 3-run victory over the Jamaica Empress Women at Kensington Oval on Saturday. Suzie Bates' key innings and a disciplined bowling effort in the death overs proved decisive for the Tridents.
Batting first, the Tridents set a target of 140, largely built around crucial partnerships, and later their bowlers stifled the Empress to just three runs short of the target.
The Tridents began their innings steadily, losing Qiana Joseph in the 4th over for 14. Bates then joined forces with Maddy Green, forging a vital 78-run partnership. Bates’ power hitting, with 39 runs off 28 balls, was instrumental in guiding the Tridents to a competitive total.
After some early wickets, Bates played confidently alongside Green to ensure the scoreboard kept ticking. This fifth wicket stand solidified the innings, compensating for early wickets and setting up a late flourish.
Jamaica Empress had a strong start in their chase, with openers Amy Hunter and Meg Lanning putting on a 104-run stand. Their aggressive strokes during the powerplay left the Tridents searching for a breakthrough.
Afy Fletcher provided the Tridents with the much-needed breakthrough, dismissing Hunter for 47. Suzie Bates, showing her all-round abilities, later removed Rashada Williams, while Qiana Joseph scalped the crucial wicket of Lanning.
As the game neared its climax, tight bowling from Cherry-Ann Fraser and the rest of the Tridents’ attack restricted the runflow. Fraser's late strike, dismissing Chinelle Henry, was pivotal as the Empress fell agonizingly short.
The Barbados Tridents will next face Guyana Amazon Warriors Women at Kensington Oval, Barbados, on Sunday.
